I honestly can’t remember how I came to own this novel. I was going through a historical fictions phase and think I bought this then but never actually read it. I will warn that this novel is incredibly graphic, with highly detailed scenes depicting rape, child abuse, and racial discrimination.

The Cellar
I was already in the cellar when it began. I was playing with my marbles avoiding Betty. She was only six years old and I wanted a little brother, not a little sister. So I hid down there; she didn’t like to go down there. It scared her. She used to think that there were monsters in the cellar. She only thought that because that’s what I’d told her. Don’t look at me like that, I just didn’t want my little sister to invade my space.
