Synopsis:

Everyone said the Graces were witches.
They moved through the corridors like sleek fish, ripples in their wake. Stares followed their backs and their hair.
They had friends, but they were just distractions. They were waiting for someone different.
All I had to do was show them that person was me.

Like everyone else in her town, River is obsessed with the Graces, attracted by their glamour and apparent ability to weave magic. But are they really what they seem? And are they more dangerous than they let on?

My Review:

I bought this book a few years ago, and in the mission to bring down my TBR pile I finally picked this book up.

I found the premise of this story interesting and I did like the concept when I was reading of the Grace family and the secrets they hide. This novel is written from the point of view of the narrator, whose real name we never discover, she choses to go by River so I’ll refer to her by that name in my review.

River is the epitome of an unreliable narrator; she is obsessed with the Graces and this narrative shows it. She spends most of her time talking about them or wondering what they are doing. I didn’t find River to be a very likeable character, and it did affect my enjoyment of the book. She’s hypocritical, judgemental and uses magic to punish people and get what she wants.

Now, here is my issue. Nothing seems to really happen until the last portion of the novel, to the point where I had to go back a couple of pages to see what I missed when the twist happens. I did enjoy the twist, albeit a little predictable but I wanted it to happen much sooner in the novel without all the narrative showing how obsessed River was with the siblings.

I’ve seen that the sequel is from Summer’s perspective, who is a character that I did like so I’ll probably continue with this series. I’m hoping that we get more of the siblings in the sequel and less of River.
