Film Review: The Imitation Game

I’ve been wanting to watch this movie for a while and today I finally got around to watching it. I won’t pretend to know much about Alan Turing and the Enigma code. I know that if it had never been cracked the war may have gone on for many more years and we may have even lost. Turing story is gripping and I was interested immediately. I loved his idiosyncrasies and Benedict Cumberbatch’s acting was sensational.

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I decided to look into Alan Turing history and found out that not long after the war he committed suicide after being arrested for indecency (homosexuality) and underwent chemical castration. This broke my heart, even though I knew that homosexuality was illegal back then it absolutely broke my heart, that this man with a group of other mathematical genius broke an unbreakable code. I wasn’t aware that the breaking of the code was kept secret for 50 years until I saw this movie. I don’t pretend to be knowledgeable about World War II. This movie shed light on technology and what we have today in terms of computers. I would highly recommend it just prepare for your heart to be broken at the end.

Alan Turing in 1951

Turing was posthumously pardon for his conviction of gross indecency in 2012 but what of the other 49,000 men who were convicted for being gay. I saw a petition to have them pardon too, and I’ll post the link for anyone who is interested in signing.

I’m glad that I am living in a time where homosexuality isn’t criminal and they are now free to be lawfully married. I wish that Turing, a man that helped to stop the Nazi’s was able to see it.
