Illumicrate Unboxing | Monstrous | May 2020

Theme of the Box

Description by Illumicrate

We’re talking true monsters, ones lurking in the dark and hidden places, humans hiding monstrous tendencies and those who think they’re monsters when really they aren’t. Our featured book this month is set in an unforgiving ice world, where children are thrown deep into the ice and left to their fate. But there’s monsters in the dark, and there’s humans that can’t be trusted, and there’s secrets to discover.

The Items

Book Sleeve
Inspired by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Design by @pauhami

I’ve never had a book sleeve before (shocking I know) but this was very welcomed for someone who is constantly afraid of damaging her books in her handbag.

Decals Set

I’ll be honest, this was a little meh for me. I like them, but I wasn’t blown away by them. They aren’t really something I’d use.

Mercado de la Muerte Hot Chocolate

Designed by: @thetealeafcompany

I do love me some hot chocolate. I wasn’t able to try this due allergies but my boyfriend said it was very delicious.

Phone Stand
Inspired by Howl’s Moving Castle
Design by @Fableandblack

One of my favourite items in this box. I have been needing to get a phone stand for ages and I was so happy to pull this out of the box.

Post-Its
Inspired by The Witcher
Design by @Thousandwrecks

These are small quirky little post-its. Don’t think I’ll ever use them but I did enjoy seeing an item inspired by The Witcher

This edition is signed by the author with exclusive sprayed edges. There was also an Author’s note included which I thought was a nice added touch.

On Abeth the vastness of the ice holds no room for individuals. Survival together is barely possible. No one survives alone. To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is not the same.

Yaz is torn from the only life she’s ever known, away from her family, from the boy she thought she would spend her days with, and has to carve out a new path for herself in a world whose existence she never suspected. A world full of difference and mystery and danger.

Yaz learns that Abeth is older and stranger than she had ever imagined. She learns that her weaknesses are another kind of strength. And she learns to challenge the cruel arithmetic of survival that has always governed her people

There was a couple of items in here that I wouldn’t use but all in all, it was a nice box. I loved the book sleeve and the phone stand. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next month.
