Theatre Review: RENT!

On Wednesday I took my sister to go and see a musical we both love. RENT! I wasn’t expecting something brilliant. It was a small production that was only in Sheffield for a week. I just knew that if we didn’t go and see it we would regret it.

Don’t know what RENT! is. Here’s the synopsis “Rent is the Tony Award & Pulitzer Prize winning rock opera based loosely on Puccini’s La Bohéme. The show follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City’s East Village, under the shadow of AIDS.”  It is absolutely brilliant, and if it’s not in the theatre where you are, go and rent the DVD.

When we arrived my sister and I expected there to be only a few of us in the theatre. We had not met anyone who knew what the musical was, we were very surprised when we took our seats (directly above the stage) and saw more and more people enter the theatre. It was almost a full house, it this was what it was like on a Wednesday, what was it like on opening night?

Half 7 rolled around and the production started, the first official song was called “Rent”, but of course it is a musical so there is very little that isn’t sung. These are songs that get stuck in your head and you find yourself singing them for days. “La Vie Boheme”, “Your Eyes”, “I’ll Cover You”

The casting was brilliant, Mark looked exactly how I imagined him, Angel was truly amazing and the girls voices were sensational. It’s times like this that I was our brains had a reply button because this is something that I would see again and again.

This musical is funny, emotional and brilliant and I advise you, go and watch it. I doubt you will regret it. I am definitely going to see more theatre productions in the future because that was one of the best nights I’ve had.
